Seymour Johnson

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, NC just opened its newly renovated Officer's Club on September 14, 2007. I was honored to receive a commission to paint Seymour Johnson, the naval officer whom the base is named for; Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is the only air force base in the United States named for a naval officer. The painting is now hanging in the foyer of the club. You can read more information about this commission HERE. And if you would like more information on my prices for commissions, Click Here.

These three paintings were made on separate plates, but meant to hang along-side each other. The first course is a cucumber salad, the main course is neapolitan porkchops with broccoli, and the dessert is a slice of raspberry cheesecake. The plates are 8.5" in diameter, and have been prepared for hanging. The "VWL 2006" shown on the images is a watermark, and is not actually on the paintings

This one is painted a little differently from how I usually paint. I started off painting the butterfly and the flowers, and I was bored with the subject matter. Instead of painting the grass realistically in the background, I decided to add some contour drawings repeating the flowers, as well as some swirls and twirling grass.

Sunday Morning

"Sunday Morning"

11" x 14"

Sold

I'm sorry to post two older paintings in a row, but I was at the beach for a few days; hopefully, I will have something new to post by Wednesday. We played golf, putt-putt, and went swimming, and I took pictures all throughout the weekend, so eventually you'll see some of them turned into paintings. High point of the weekend: I made par on a par 3 while my dad and husband made bogies. (Sorry Jeff and Dad). This is only worth mentioning because I am a beginner and pretty terrible, and my par 3 was quite exciting :)

I finished this painting a little over a year ago, and I'm still rather fond of it.... which is rare for me. I usually dislike most of my paintings about a month after painting them, but I think that's because I'm continuously growing, so I'm fine with that. I'll be more worried when/if I begin to plateau. . . but I don't like to think like that :) However, due to my fondness of it, I can't bring myself to post it on eBay for as cheap as I've been listing some of my other work. I know that some people like to view work in person if they are spending a little more money so if any of you are in the North Carolina area, this painting is hanging in the Burlington Artists League Gallery in the Burlington Mall. You can purchase it in person, or you can order it from my website. The canvas is gallery wrapped, the edges are painted, and it's ready for hanging. Also, the "VWL 2006" is just a watermark; it's not actually on the painting.

I've recently moved back to my homestate of NC, and I love how I can drive half a mile from my house and see haystacks everywhere... so of course I had to paint a couple. I haven't done a landscape in a while, and I don't think this one is quite as strong as my still lifes, so look for more in the future as I work diligently to improve!

I painted this painting, like most of my paintings, from a photograph. I was in a diner on a family vacation when I looked up and saw the ceiling fan; I thought the neon lights and the reflective colors on the glass blades were beautiful, so I took the picture. Before I painted it, I put it in photoshop and altered the colors so that the majority of the painting fell into this monochromatic viridian hue which, for some reason, seemed to match my mood at that point in time.

This is one of my older drawings. On Thursday nights/Friday mornings, I've decided to post work that I've either been hanging on to, or that I need to relist on Ebay for a 2nd time. Due to this fact, the minimum bids should be quite a bit lower. (This one being only $10!)

This original painting is titled "Outcast" and the title is meant to draw your attention to the personification of the items in the still life. The soap pumps and sugar canister in the background look as if they are meeting privately, while the soap pump in the foreground is being left out. It was painted with oils on a 9" x 12" gallery wrapped canvas; the edges are painted, and it's ready for hanging.

Piazza della Rotunda

"Piazza della Rotunda"

6" x 12"

Sold

On my honeymoon, Jeff and I spent a few days in Rome, and I painted this from one of the photographs that I took at the Piazza della Rotunda. On one side of the piazza is the Pantheon, and on the other side is a McDonald's. In this painting, the Pantheon was behind me, and you can see the little umbrellas adorning the outside of this McDonald's "cafe." It was a unique experience to sit eating a cheeseburger while gazing at the Pantheon, listening to live music from the two characters in the painting. I've enjoyed having this painting hanging in my house, however, I like to switch my artwork around every so often so I think it's time to sell it. I've lowered the minimum bid to $25 since it isn't one of my most recent paintings. Enjoy!

This original painting is titled "Larger than Life," and it was painted from a photograph that I took at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. I went on a family reunion last month to Stone Mountain, GA, and while I was there, I went to the aquarium in Atlanta. I took several pictures there that I thought would be fun to paint (this being one of them). Jeff (my husband) helped me title it; he thought it looked like a cumulous cloud. (a cumuloNIMBUS cloud...to be exact).

I really had fun painting this one; the folds in the shirt and the jeans were my favorite part. This man was working next to my booth at the farmer's market; I set up there last year a few times to sell some prints and t-shirts, and I met a lot of fun, interesting people. A couple of them still stand out in my mind- Paul Beverly and Sandy Dyche had a booth called "P. S. It's Leather." (The P.S. comes from the first letters in each of their names). Everything they sold was leather- they made leather "paintings," jewelry, and even some 3-D leather art (among other things.) Here is a link to some of their work. Be sure to check out "With the Indians;" it's a 3-D set all made out of leather!

Moving Plaid

"Moving Plaid"

11" x 14"

Sold

To those of you that check my site regularly- I'm sorry it has taken so long to post a new painting. Jeff and I are currently in the process of moving from Richmond to Elon. If you haven't heard, Jeff was recently hired as an "events coordinator" at Elon University, and we're both very excited about moving back to NC!

This latest painting was a lot of fun for me to paint, although the plaid pattern did challenge my patience a little. I was drawn to painting this photograph because of the implied movement; I like being able to picture the movement of the shaking of the blanket as it would have continued after the picture was taken.

Modern Art

"Modern Art"

9" x 12"

Sold

The painting in the background is by Anne Truitt, and it's titled "Wall Stripes No. 3." You can find it at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. I know that a great deal of the population doesn't understand or appreciate Modern Art, "color field painting" in particular. I can't honestly say that it's my favorite period in art, but I do enjoy it nonetheless, and I wish that so many of the concepts that artists were experimenting with in the 20th century weren't so over my head.

Job Hunting

Once again, Jeff and I are looking for jobs. I only mention this because someone in Richmond recently contacted me for an interview after seeing my blog, so you never know who happens to be reading. We are hoping to move back to North Carolina and are specifically looking at Raleigh and Greensboro. I've put in applications for all kinds of positions at UNC-G, N.C. State and Meredith (to name a few). If anyone out there knows anyone that needs someone that is artistic, hard-working and EXTREMELY organized, feel free to mention my name!
